Tim Schnoeker

On December 21st, Peabody Energy and Logos School presented Coulterville High School educator Timothy D. Schnoeker with the first-ever Peabody/Logos “Leaders in Education” award. The honor recognizes Mr. Schnoeker for his pioneering 20-year career teaching students to use technology and trade skills to benefit the community. “Tim realizes that some lessons can’t be taught with textbooks. So, he reaches kids with real-life vocational activities that also help their neighbors in need,” says Coulterville High School Principal Karyn Albers. “Tim does more than build our students’ skills; he builds their character.”
In the past three years, Mr. Schnoeker’s students have rebuilt housing in hurricane-ravaged Mississippi. They have also constructed and donated a playhouse to the Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children, which protects the rights of children in foster care, and the students designed and built a handicap-accessible driveway and ramp at a Highland, Ill., group home for individuals with develiopmental disabilities.

Shiree Yeggins-Campbell

Shiree Yeggins-Campbell is a strong leader with excellent communication and organizational skills. Working effectively with students, parents, staff, and administrators to provide quality services to students and families is an area of strength for Shiree. Relations with her “constituency” are excellent, demonstrated by the good relationships she enjoys with the parents of her students.

Shiree serves as the co-chair of the district-wide Achievement Gap Steering Committee; she was instrumental in the development and implementation of Webster Challenge, a new and innovative experience for high school students of color. The mission of Webster Challenge is to reduce the African American achievement gap by 50% by the end of 2011-2012 school year. Objectives of Webster Challenge include:

1.	Decrease the disparity in academic performance between African American students and Caucasian students from one full point to half of a point of GPA, essentially decreasing the achievement gap by 50%.
2.	Create positive “trickling down” effect and break down the academic barrier faced by many of our African American students.
3.	Foster the transition for African American students to high school in a way that allows them to focus more on academic involvement rather than social acceptance.

Shiree fulfills our district mission statement daily – “The Webster Groves School District is committed to academic and personal success for every student” – as she is one of the most child-centered administrators I know. She supports students by guiding them to resources when they need anything from computer access to prom attire. Students view Dr. Yeggins-Campbell as firm (she has high expectations), dedicated (keeps long work hours), caring (will assist and support them), and fun (enjoys celebrating their success).

Michelle Elliott

This week we salute Michelle Elliott of Central School in O’Fallon, Illinois
As an educator the goal is to give students a foundation that will make them productive members of society. This includes but is not limited to teaching them to read, write and do math, helping them to develop socially and emotionally, and building their character. Each day Michelle Elliott steps into her classroom, she is faced with the challenge of developing these skills in students who have severe social and emotional disabilities and who were unable to succeed in their regular education classroom. There are five students from four different grade levels and all with different needs in Michelle’s classroom. Michelle possesses the ability to connect with her students and create excitement through her rich instruction and use of technology. These students, who once disliked school and were disciplined on a daily basis, are now excited to come to school and are learning to become productive citizens. It is wonderful to see the impact Mrs. Elliott has had on the lives on the five students in her classroom. They are exceeding academically and have made great strides in controlling their behaviors and emotions.

In addition, Michelle is one of the leaders of the staff at Central School. She serves on the School Leadership Team, is involved in various after school activities and is a mentor to a first year teacher. She is called upon often to share her expertise in the areas of behaviors management and technology. Michelle’s dedication to the education profession and her compassion for her students make her an exceptional teacher. Congratulations Michelle Elliott, the Peabody Logos Leader in Education.

Lamar Harris

This week we salute, Lamar Harris of Crossroads College Preparatory School.
Because of Lamar’s enthusiasm and the success of the program, each year increasing numbers of students become involved in music. All are welcome regardless of experience. This is possible because of Lamar’s willingness to provide individual instruction to those willing to learn. Students tutor one another, practice together during lunch and after school and display a camaraderie that demonstrates what it means to be an orchestra or a band. The student musicians, under the leadership of Lamar are greatly admired and supported by the student body.
It would not be an overstatement to say that Lamar Harris has created an enviable music program. A talented instructor, willing students and the love of music is a combination that Crossroads College Prep is proud to call its own.

Janice Crowe

This week we salute Janice Crowe of City Academy. After decades of teaching at St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf, Janice shifted her attention to help African-American children with language delays or dialectical differences to perform at their best. Thus, she moved to City Academy, located in north St. Louis city. City Academy is a private independent elementary school serving families with limited educational opportunities. While the students’ parents are committed to their children’s education, many students have not been exposed to activities that develop language and motor skills. The school needed a learning specialist who could help address this problem.
Janice has also played a critical role in helping other teachers to develop as professionals. She is keenly aware that many of today’s teachers are underprepared for the challenges they face. Thus, she has gently assumed the role of guide and mentor, modeling effective strategies for her colleagues rather than giving them instructions.
There is no doubt that Janice is a leader, but she has never sought the privileges of leadership—public recognition, prestigious position or a generous salary. The winner of this week’s Peabody Logos Leaders in Education Award is Ms. Janice Crowe, from City Academy…what a terrific way to acknowledge her contributions to the children of St. Louis.
