February’s Call to Action: Preventing Teen Dating Violence Through Education and Support

Teen dating violence includes a wide range of abusive behaviors including emotional, physical, sexual and digital abuse. This can be manifested as controlling behaviors, excessive jealousy, verbal harassment, cyberstalking, physical assault and sexual coercion. The first step to intervention is to recognize the warning signs. They can include:

  • Isolating their partners from family and friends.
  • Sudden changes in mood and behavior: Victims can become anxious, depressed, or withdrawn.
  • Unexplained or fabricated injuries: Physical abuse may leave visible marks or cause a fabricated excuse.
  • Constantly checking in: Requiring frequent communication or monitoring of social media can indicate control.
  • Unwarranted suspicions and accusations may indicate a negative dynamic.

To prevent teen dating violence, education is essential. We empower young people to recognize red flags, make informed decisions, and promote healthy relationships by educating them about consent, and boundaries. Resources like Safe Connections (safeconnections.org), Youth.gov (youth.gov), and organizations like Human Options provide valuable information and support for both teens and adults. Youth.gov's feature article on Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month offers further insight into this important issue.

It is important to support victims. It is important to create a supportive and safe environment for teens, so they feel comfortable in revealing abuse. Access to confidential resources, legal aid, and counseling services are all part of this. Encourage open communication within communities and families.

It is our collective responsibility to prevent teen dating violence. Let's intensify our efforts in February to support and educate young people. We can work together to create a world where teens have healthy, respectful relationships, free of violence and abuse. Make this month one of action. Empower the next generation for a better future. Please contact the above resources if you or someone else you know needs help. You are not on your own!
