The Benefits of Summer School at LOGOS
For some students, summer break is a time to kick back, relax and enjoy. For others, summer break can be a major source of stress especially if they rely on school for safety, structure, and/or social/emotional connectedness. Losing those supports over the summer months can set students back and make the transition into the Fall more challenging. Parents whose children have academic gaps, need credit recovery and/or need social/emotional wellness during the summer often struggle to find summer enrichment programs or activities that meet their needs. LOGOS Summer Intensive Program can offer relief to families by providing academic and therapeutic support in a structured but flexible environment.
What is summer school at LOGOS?
LOGOS is an 11-month school which allows students to benefit from the program with little interruption from academic and therapeutic support. LOGOS Summer Intensive Program (SIP) is designed for prospective students or students in need of a summer enrichment program only to experience our unique program for five weeks. Students entering grades 6-12 can recover academic credit with our expert teachers and receive therapeutic support from our licensed therapists to develop important life skills needed in the classroom and beyond.
SIP is the perfect way for students and their families to experience LOGOS School's structured but flexible environment, which gives students who have not been successful in a traditional classroom the space and support necessary to grow and learn. Small class sizes (6:1 student/teacher ratio) and individual and group therapy sessions are used to support students as they achieve the individualized academic and therapeutic goals established at the start of the program.
How long is summer school at LOGOS?
SIP is an intensive 5-week program that runs June 12th through July 13th. The hours are Monday - Friday from 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. The cost is $3000.
If students find success in the SIP Program, they can opt to enroll for the upcoming school year and continue to benefit from the academic and therapeutic program.
Does summer school benefit the student?
In the Fall of 2021, the American Academy of Pediatrics along with the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Children’s Hospital Association declared a national emergency in child and adolescent mental health. Given this national mental health crisis for adolescents, a summer program can offer many benefits.
- Students can learn, re-learn key skills, and recover credit if they missed schooling during the year due to mental and/or physical issues.
- Students can benefit from structure and routine. They can experience setting goals and achieve results which also can help increase confidence.
- Students can stay connected socially. They can learn new social and life skills through their interactions with peers and educators.
I have received positive feedback from students (and their parents) who have participated in the SIP Program. Students expressed being thankful they were able to recover credit and be on track with their graduation date. I have had some incoming high school students be able to earn credit the summer before starting high school and experience adjusting to high school with additional time and support. Likewise, the SIP Program has also helped incoming middle school students transition to middle school. Each year, LOGOS has had between 50-75% of the SIP students enroll for the upcoming school year because of their success in the program. Either way, students and parents are provided an academic and therapeutic summary that assesses their strengths and opportunities and helps the continuation of their academics and therapy whether they enroll at LOGOS or another school.
What is credit recovery?
Credit recovery allows a student to retake a failed course for high school graduation and earn credit if the student successfully completes the course requirements.
How can a student earn credit recovery at LOGOS?
High school students who participate in the SIP Program can take 2 courses for credit recovery. They will retake the failed courses and if they pass, they will earn .5 credits in each course. LOGOS will provide a transcript of the earned credit.
I receive numerous inquiries about summer enrichment programs for adolescents from parents whose children have academic gaps, need credit recovery and/or need social/emotional wellness during the summer. Parents are stressed for options because there are limited resources for summer camps and activities for teenagers especially if they have social/emotional challenges
Attending the summer program at LOGOS can provide parents and students with the structure and support they are looking for during the summer. It is the perfect way for students and families to experience LOGOS School’s structured but flexible environment, which gives students who need additional support the opportunity to learn and grow. In past years, students enrolled in the program found success in improving their coping, self-advocacy, problem-solving and socialization skills while increasing their academic skills and earning credit recovery.
